How to Make Newspaper Roses
What you need:
- printable template (optional)
- pencil
- scissors
- glue
- old newspaper or magazines
- green color paper or a paper straw
Tip: These are also gorgeous when made with crepe paper
Step-by-Step Tutorial
We prepared a simple template for this one, but it’s not necessary. Either print our template or draw two petal shapes on a piece of cardstock (one larger 2.5 inch/7 cm and one smaller 2 inch/ 5 cm for example).
This will be our guide for shaping the newspaper rose petals.
Cut a wider strips of newspaper, it should be wider than the height of your petal. The length isn’t as important as you can always use more paper strips.
Fold the paper strips into an accordion.
Each fold should be roughly the same width as the width of the petal template.
Once folded, place the template on top.
Trace around the petal.
Cut along the pencil line but make sure not to cut the left and the right edge of the petal (in the same way as paper garlands are made).
Only cut along the top and bottom edges, leaving the sides intact.
Carefully unfold the newspaper to reveal a garland-like strip.
Repeat the process with the other petal shape.
To give the paper rose a more realistic look, use a pencil (or something else) to curl the top edges of each newspaper petal.
This will give your newspaper rose a more realistic shape.
Time to make the stem. You can use a green paper straw or make your own using green paper.
Roll the paper into a flower stem and apply glue at the end.
Glue the stem to the center of the first newspaper petal. Depending on the glue, you will need to wait a little while for it to set as you want your first petal to be super secure.
Now take the smaller petal paper strip and apply a small amount of glue to the bottom parts of other petals.
Gently roll each newspaper petal onto the stem.
One by one, stick the bottom parts of the petals to the stem.
All the way to the last petal. You can add a bit of extra glue here to keep things in place.
Now take the paper strip with the larger petals and glue it on in the same manner.
Once all the petals are rolled onto the stem, seal the end with glue to secure this beautiful newspaper rose in place.
These eco-friendly newspaper roses are perfect for decorating your home or giving as heartfelt gifts for Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day.
Well done, crafty crew!
There you have it – a fun and sustainable crafting adventure for kids and yourself.
Happy crafting, everyone!
