Getting a handmade Christmas card brings a whole lot of joy. Making one that looks great doesn’t have to be complicated; this easy natural Christmas card idea looks really unique, and it’s super easy to make.
Cypress tree branches are the best to use as they are usually thicker, but other trees can be used as well. If you don’t have a cypress tree in your backyard, you can turn this project into a tree-hunting adventure with your kids, which is also a great opportunity to teach the kids about the different types of coniferous trees.

The scent of coniferous trees is one of the staple scents of Christmas, albeit less in modern times than it was before. This easy Christmas craft is great for all ages; younger kids will easily manage one, and you can make a gorgeous-looking card as well. Perfect for a session of the whole family crafting together, making DIY Christmas cards.
How to Make This Easy Natural Christmas Card Idea
What you need:
- cypress (or other coniferous tree) twig
- scrapbooking paper (optional), you can also use regular paper
- pom poms (optional)
- glue
- scissors
- cardstock in different colors
As not all trees are made the same way, you might need to go on a hunt to find just the right one. There are many varieties, and some are perfect to use straight from the tree, while others will benefit from being pressed down for a while to flatten them out.
In general, these cards hold out really well.
Step by Step Tutorial
You can purchase blank cards in craft stores or you can have the kids make their own. For the best size, cut a sheet of letter-sized or A4 cardstock paper in half. Take one half and fold it in half making a blank card. Any color works, as we’ll be making the white background for the card, the stronger the color, the more the card will pop.
Cut a smaller rectangle from white construction paper or another bright-colored one. You can trace around the card and just cut off a bit on top and from the side.
Apply glue on the rectangle and stick it on the folded card.
Take on cypress twig, and trim it off to the size where it will be just a little shorter than the size of the white rectangle. Apply white glue on the twig.
Carefully glue the twig on the card. Hold it in place for a little while, gently pressing down, for the glue to set.
Cut out a trapezoid shape out of scrapbooking paper. You can use regular paper as well, but patterns on scrapbooking paper really add something to the card.
Apply glue on the paper and press it on the card. Hold it in place for the glue to set.
It’s time to decorate the mini cypress tree. Take a couple of pom poms. Apply glue on the pompom (glue stick works as well).
Gently press the pom pom on the card, hold in place for a little while.
All done! We hope you liked this easy natural Christmas card idea and that you will be making a whole bunch with your family.
