Making toilet paper roll bugs is super fun! It’s a very open ended craft as there are 1001 ways, if not more, you can decorate your bug. Make a firefly, moth or an alien bug – the crafting choice is completely yours.

We love toilet paper roll bugs, we’ve made quite a few already in some different shapes and techniques – this windsock ladybug toilet paper roll craft and this toilet paper roll bee craft are one of our favorites. But there is a gazzilion ways you can make bugs really and today we are showing you a more open ended approach.
Supply your kids with a variety of supplies…
…and let them do their magic in designing their favorite or imaginary bug.
We are sure they will be making amazing creations and to kick start their imagination, we are showing you 4 cool bugs.
We will show you a step by step of the firefly and the beetle, but you can also see the bee and the ladybug.
Then you can make the others completely on your own.
Quick, go take some toilet paper rolls out of your stash and let’s start crafting.
How to Make Toilet Paper Roll Bugs
What you need:
- toilet paper rolls
- craft paints
- glue
- split pins (optional)
- black liner
- brush
- scissors
- color papers (red, blue, green and more)
- googly eyes
- circle puncher
Step by Step Instructions
Beetle
Cover the toilet paper roll in green acrylic color. Let it dry.
Paint 3 blue stripes over the green paper roll. Punch one blue circle with the circle puncher and glue the googly eyes on. Draw a mouth and a tiny tongue. Glue the head to the paper roll. Cut out two big blue wings and two smaller green ones.Attach the wings to the paper roll using split pins. Cut out 6 green stripes for the legs and 2 green stripes for the bug antennae.
Glue 6 strips on the body, three on each side.
Glue the antennae on the head.
Firefly
Paint over the paper roll with black acrylic paint.
Make a green stripe at the bottom of the paper roll.
Cut out one tiny green heart and glue it on the paper roll.
Punch one red circle using the circle puncher and glue the googly eyes on.
Draw a tiny mouth and a tongue using the black liner.
Glue the head to the body.
Cut out two red wing shapes and attach them to the body using split pins.
Cut out 6 red stripes for the legs and 2 red stripes for the antennae.
Glue the legs on, three on each side.
Add the 2 antennae on.
All done!
Now make these bugs flying by moving their wings.
