Love space and butterflies? Make this galaxy butterfly pom pom craft!
These are insanely cute, sparkly and can be used both as a crafting session or as a simple art project for kids to make. And it comes with a butterfly template!

This project is perfect to use to teach kids about symmetry – it’s an amazing spring art lesson for preschool (skip the template if possible and if time allows).
While we are crazy about how these galaxy patterns turned out, your kids can use a variety of different colors and go beyond the galaxy palette.
How to Make Galaxy Butterfly Pom Pom Craft
What you need:
- cardstock
- paint
- pipe cleaners
- pom poms
- googly eyes or sickers
- scissors
- glue
- paint brush
- marker
- biodegradable glitter
Galaxy Butterfly Pom Pom Craft Instructions
Start by printing the template or drawing the butterfly of your own (we do have a how to draw a butterfly tutorial that might be of some help to younger kids, although the design is simpler than the one we offer in the template). Print the template or draw the butterfly on cardstock.
Cut out the template or your drawing – fold it in half and unfold.
Add paint on one side – add drops, bloops and lines, colors can go one over the other.
Close up the butterfly – give it a bit of a push for the paint to spread.
Open up the butterfly again. Looking nice isn’t it? Now comes the boring part. Wait for the paint to dry.
Use a toothbrush or paintbrush to flick the white paint across the butterfly.This gives your paining an even more galaxy like feeling.
Add a few drops or stripes of glue and sprinkle gold glitter on the glue.
Grab your pom poms. If you have them in different sizes, glue a large one at the top of the butterfly (for the head). Stick the smaller ones one after the other for the body (if you have mini pom poms, use them at the bottom of the body).
Cut the pipe cleaners and curl them at the top. Stick them on the back of the large pom pom.
All that is left is to add a pair of googly eyes.
All done!
