How to Make the Easy Heart Symmetry Art

What you need:

  • scissors
  • glue
  • cardstock or construction paper (red and white)
  • washable paints (colors of your choice)
  • paintbrush
  • black marker

Step by Step Tutorial

We’ll need a heart shape! You can use our printable heart outlines, or you or your kids can draw their own.

If making your own, fold a sheet of paper in half.

Step 1

Draw half of a heart shape on the folded side of the cardstock.

Step 2

Cut out the shape.

Step 3

Then, unfold the cardstock to reveal the complete heart shape.

Step 4

It’s painting time!

Let the kids add blobs of paint on one half of the heart.

Step 5

Have them add a bunch of blobs in different colors (we chose pink paint overlapping with the red paint for interesting color variations).

Step 6

Let them add as many as they like, but don’t take to long on this step to avoid paints drying.

Once kids are happy with their color choices, it’s time to make symmetry art!

Step 8

Have kids carefully fold the heart again.

Step 9

Press down on the folded heart to transfer the paint to the opposite side of the heart.

Step 10

It’s time to unfold the unique heart pattern!

Ta-da!

How awesome and unique the colors look when they mix!

Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step. This helps prevent smudging when handling the artwork.

Step 11

Have kids place the painted heart on a red cardstock sheet, trace a larger heart shape around it, and cut it out.

Step 12

The final step is to apply glue to the back of the painted heart and carefully place it onto the center of the red heart, creating a border around it.

Step 13

This lovely heart symmetry craft is perfect for gifting on occasions like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day.
