It’s time to put a new string art display out for the summer months – today we are showing you how to make an easy sailboat string art for kids and beginners.
We are using yarn for these simple projects as it’s easier for little hands to handle, if you are doing this project with older kids you can just use a regular string.

I just love how string art decor looks, and as it’s pretty easy to make you can have a new display each month (or season).
Sailboat String Art for Kids
What you need:
- 5 different colors of yarn
- Red Heart in Bright Yellow
- Red Heart in Soft White
- Red Heart in Cherry Red
- Red Heart in Black
- Red Heart in Shaded Dusk (blue)
- Tack Hammer
- Wire Nails (18 x 3/4″)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Wood Board measures about 8″ x 9″ x 3/4″
Directions:
Lightly sketch a sailboat onto your wood board with a pencil.
Begin to pound your nails by driving them into the wood about half way. Keep the nails about 1/2″ apart. When you’ve completed the pattern you’ve drawn, wash your hands.
We string our board in this order: Red, Yellow, White, Blue and Black.
Begin to string your board by double knotting the red string around the nail. Zig zag your yarn back and forth skipping about every other nail. If the yarn slips, be sure to wrap it around the entire nail head about every fifth nail. When you are happy with the coverage, work your yarn back to your starting point.
Create the outline of your yarn by wrapping the yarn around the outside of the nail and moving to the next nail. Wrap your yarn around the entire nail head and carry it to the next nail. Repeat until you’re back where you started.
When you reach the starting point, cut your yarn and knot it with the starting yarn. Trim the excess.
Repeat until you’ve completed all colors.
Note the order we created: It was that order because we didn’t outline all of the shapes. We only outlined the top and sides of the boat and not the part that was in the water. The same goes for the sails.
